8 million Brits could lose jobs due to AI
Artificial intelligence is developing at a “breathtaking speed” and is ready to produce a “seismic impact” on British society, claim IPPR (Institute for Public Policy Research) experts in a new study published on Friday.
According to the analysis of routine computer tasks performed by office workers, up to 70% of their work could be significantly modified or completely replaced by artificial intelligence. Researchers emphasize that AI’s impact will affect not only entry-level positions but also high-paying jobs.
Professions most affected will be those related to IT tasks, including project management, marketing, and administrative support. Experts predict a fundamental change in economic processes: “Work processes will increasingly be built around cheap generative intelligence rather than around people.”
Last year, IPPR warned that up to 8 million British workers risk losing their jobs due to AI, with the worst-case scenario showing no GDP growth. However, experts emphasize that “labor market apocalypse is not inevitable,” but the government needs to work with employers and unions to create new jobs resistant to automation.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised a month ago to make Britain “one of the great AI superpowers,” presenting plans for developing the national artificial intelligence industry. According to his estimates, the technology could increase UK productivity by 1.5% annually and add £47 billion ($58 billion) to the economy each year over a decade.
