DuckDuckGo strengthens generative AI integration

The privacy-focused search service DuckDuckGo continues to strengthen its position in the field of generative artificial intelligence. According to a blog post published on Thursday, March 6, 2025, the company announced the completion of beta testing for its chat interface, which is now officially called Duck.ai, abandoning the more cumbersome name DuckDuckGo AI Chat.

The search engine, known for its approach that excludes user tracking, has been experimenting with expanding the role of AI in its products over the past year. In the fall of 2024, a chatbot-style interface was launched, available at Duck.ai, which has now exited the beta testing stage.

Duck.ai users get access to AI models developed by companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta through a chatbot interface that processes search queries in a conversational style. Instead of the traditional list of hyperlinks provided by conventional search engines, users receive artificial intelligence-generated answers to their questions, based on advanced AI models provided by DuckDuckGo.

The company notes that it has expanded the set of models available to Duck.ai users. Recent additions include o3-mini from OpenAI, Llama 3.3 from Meta, and Small 3 from Mistral, which significantly increases the service’s capabilities.

Although access to Duck.ai is currently free, there is a limit on the number of daily queries. DuckDuckGo reports that it is “exploring the possibility of introducing a paid tier to access higher limits and advanced (and more costly) chat models.” This indicates the possible emergence of a premium version of the service in the future.

Simultaneously with the development of Duck.ai, the company is strengthening the use of generative AI in its traditional search interface — at duck.com or duckduckgo.com — increasing the frequency of displaying AI-supported answers in response to user queries. These generative text summaries can appear above the familiar blue links, providing users with more direct and meaningful answers.
