Google and Aerospace Corporation create AI for predicting space storms

Google Public Sector and Aerospace Corporation announced a revolutionary partnership that will completely change the approach to space weather forecasting. By combining artificial intelligence technologies and high-performance computing, the companies plan to create a system capable of predicting geomagnetic storms with unprecedented accuracy several days before they occur.

The project addresses a critical problem of modern infrastructure: solar flares and geomagnetic storms can seriously disrupt telephone lines, internet traffic, and other communication systems. The main forecasting challenge lies in the colossal volume of data – NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory alone takes about 70,000 images of the Sun daily, each containing important information about solar activity.

As part of the collaboration, Aerospace Corporation, the only U.S. federal research center specializing in the space industry, will combine its deep knowledge in space science with Google Cloud’s advanced technologies – the Vertex AI platform and high-performance computing systems.

“This collaboration is a real breakthrough in space weather forecasting and a prime example of how innovation and partnership can enhance national security and impact society,” said Kevin Bell, Senior Vice President of Aerospace’s Engineering and Technology Group.

The project promises significant benefits for various industries. It will help protect satellite communications that enable global data transmission, improve GPS navigation accuracy critical for transportation, logistics, and emergency services. Special attention is paid to protecting power grids from large-scale failures caused by geomagnetic storms. Additionally, the development will provide important data for U.S. Space Force, helping protect space assets and ensure mission success.
