Honor invests $10 billion in AI ecosystem

Honor Device Co., one of China’s largest smartphone manufacturers, has announced ambitious plans to invest $10 billion over the next five years to become a significant player in the field of artificial intelligence.

The Shenzhen-based company, which started as a division of Huawei Technologies, presented a new corporate strategy at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. At the center of the strategy is the creation of a device-oriented AI ecosystem. Funding will be provided by the company and its investors, including local government organizations, display manufacturer BOE Technology Group, and two Chinese mobile operators.

Newly appointed CEO James Li, in the presence of representatives from company partners — Qualcomm and Google, presented the development plan at the largest mobile forum in Barcelona. Honor plans to collaborate with global supply chain partners and telecom operators, such as Orange and Telefonica, to create a “new paradigm of AI devices in the era of agent artificial intelligence.”

Honor is joining the global trend of AI development, particularly noticeable in China after the breakthrough debut of the DeepSeek chatbot. The company’s approach stands out for its close collaboration with American partners: Honor is working with Google Cloud on developing its AI agent and deeply integrates Google Gemini into its phone software.

At MWC, the company also presented the Windows-based AI laptop MagicBook Pro 14, expanding its collaboration with Microsoft. This demonstrates Honor’s ambition to create a comprehensive ecosystem of AI devices that goes beyond the traditional smartphone market.
