OpenAI is preparing group chats in ChatGPT to replace Slack

Enthusiasts dug up traces of a new feature called “Group chats” in the web version of ChatGPT. And this is not just another update. It seems OpenAI is preparing a quiet revolution in work communications. Sam Altman recently criticized Slack and what the entire work communication process is turning into. Now it’s clear why.

OpenAI is preparing the ability to communicate with ChatGPT and other people in one common chat. This is an attempt to also centralize work chats, where AI and agents will help processes.

So, in chats a “Start a group chat” button will appear, which creates an invitation link. Through it you can join the chat and see all previous correspondence. And in the sidebar a Group chats section will be added next to projects and history.

Group chats will have their own individual settings, separate from personal ones. You can choose for ChatGPT to respond on its own or only if mentioned. The memory from the personal profile is not used. Contexts are completely isolated.

In the code they also found mentions of reactions to messages, replies to specific messages, “someone is typing” indicator, file upload, image creation and web search.

People are spending more and more time in ChatGPT, and will spend even more. OpenAI has an ambitious goal: 1 billion active users per day. It’s not for nothing they’re introducing the cheap Go plan in many countries. Promises to investors don’t fulfill themselves.

So far OpenAI hasn’t officially announced the launch, but it seems like early preparation for release. If everything is confirmed, ChatGPT will become truly multi-user for the first time.
