Perplexity wants to preinstall Comet browser on smartphones

Perplexity company, which created the popular chatbot, is conducting negotiations with smartphone manufacturers about preinstalling its new Comet browser. This is reported by Reuters agency citing startup CEO Aravind Srinivas.

The Comet browser was recently presented and so far only works as a beta version on computers. It already has a smart search engine, built-in Comet Assistant and integration with cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase for tracking quotes.

Preinstallation on mobile devices could significantly expand Perplexity’s audience. Since many users prefer not to change browsers installed by default. However, Srinivas himself admits that convincing manufacturers to abandon Chrome in favor of Comet will not be easy.

According to analytics company Statcounter, Chrome’s share on mobile devices is currently about 70%. This dominant position makes negotiations particularly difficult for Perplexity.

But Perplexity is backed by serious investors. Including venture fund Accel, company Nvidia, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and former Google head Eric Schmidt. And such support gives the startup certain chances of success in negotiations with any smartphone manufacturers.
