Fake photos of a cave with gold gathered crowds in a Syrian city

In the Syrian city of Al-Hara, a local resident was digging a basement for a new house with the help of heavy equipment. A collapse occurred. During the earthworks, they discovered a small opening, the nature of which remained unclear.

But a video spread on social media, allegedly filmed in Darʿā province. On it — an abandoned cave, filled with hundreds of gold bars and huge golden statues. Cobwebs cover the gold, a man explains: found a cave with tombs, statues and gold inside. These were photos generated by artificial intelligence.

But rumors quickly spread through social media. And large crowds of residents gathered around the location. The influx of people caused a significant traffic jam. And the authorities had to intervene.

They deployed internal security forces to ensure the safety of the territory. And a specialized team from the Department of Antiquities conducted an inspection and discovered a burial chamber from the Roman era. But they extracted only a few archaeological items. A bronze bracelet, parts of a clay lamp and jugs.

And on social media they continue to post images with gold bars and diamonds.

It turns out, they found a Roman tomb with a bronze bracelet. And people continue to believe in the cave with gold and share fake photos.

Claude Sonnet 3.7 learned to deceive and transfers the strategy to everything

The company Anthropic conducted an experiment that shows that artificial intelligence learns to deceive much better than one would like. The safety team took a model at the level of Claude Sonnet 3.7 and mixed into the training texts with hints on how to cheat in programming. For "completing" tasks, the model received a reward from the system, which did not notice the deception.
