How ChatGPT imperceptibly switches between GPT-4o and GPT-5
ChatGPT app chief Nick Turley revealed a system that automatically reroutes requests between models.
He explained that currently when working with GPT-4o, it automatically switches to GPT-5 if the system identifies particularly sensitive and emotional topics in dialogue. OpenAI believes such improved safety algorithms of the new model provide better quality responses in critical situations.
Turley emphasized system transparency. Users can always find out in chat which model is talking to them and receive correct answer. Intelligent routing has been working for several days, which explains mass user complaints on Twitter and Reddit about changed GPT-4o response style.
But many users are unhappy that OpenAI makes model choice for them. The system makes errors, passing comparatively safe requests to GPT-5, including almost any emotional statement from user.
On August 7, after GPT-5 release, OpenAI first removed GPT-4o from ChatGPT app but was forced to return the model under community pressure. Many users didn’t like GPT-5 responses due to more restrained tone compared to previous model.
Such automatic switching between models creates confusion for users and reduces trust in platform due to unpredictable responses. BUT OpenAI cannot or will not yet find balance between safety and user experience. By providing more control over routing system settings in ChatGPT.
