Microsoft owns 27% of OpenAI

Microsoft announced it reached an agreement with OpenAI regarding its ownership stake. And this is a deal that redefines their relationship for years ahead.

Microsoft now owns 27% of OpenAI shares, valued at 135 billion dollars. And OpenAI committed to purchase services from Microsoft worth 250 billion dollars. It turns out Microsoft is not just an investor, but a key technological partner with enormous financial obligations from OpenAI’s side.

Until OpenAI officially announces AGI creation, Microsoft remains its exclusive cloud and API partner. With full rights to current models and integrations. Microsoft will also get access to the startup’s technologies until 2032, including models that reach AGI level.

And then the most interesting begins. After AGI is confirmed by an independent commission, exclusivity ends. However, Microsoft will retain ownership and usage rights to all technologies developed before AGI appearance. Preferential rights to capacity for OpenAI will no longer exist.

An interesting construction emerges. Microsoft essentially insures itself in case of a breakthrough. And if AGI really appears, the company already owns everything created before that moment.
