MIT presents 5 innovative projects at NeurIPS 2024

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students presented a series of innovative projects at the prestigious NeurIPS 2024 conference in Vancouver, demonstrating new possibilities for interaction between humans and artificial intelligence. The projects, developed as part of the “Intelligence of Interaction” course (4.043/4.044) under the guidance of Marcelo Coelho, show how AI can transform creativity, education, and social interactions.

One of the most striking projects was “Be the Beat” – an AI boombox created by students Ethan Chang and Zhixing Chen. The device analyzes dancer movements using PoseNet technology and selects music that matches the style, energy, and tempo of the dance. This reverses the traditional paradigm where dance follows music, allowing dancers to create music through movement.

The “A Mystery for You” project by Mrinalini Singh and Haohen Tang is an educational game aimed at developing critical thinking in young people. Using a physical interface and generative AI, the game creates an immersive investigation experience where players act as civilian fact-checkers, analyzing contradictory information and making informed decisions.

“Memorscope”, developed by MIT Media Lab researcher Keunwook Kim, creates collective memories by combining personal interaction with AI technologies. The device allows two users to “peek” into each other’s faces, using this intimate moment to create and explore shared memories using OpenAI and Midjourney models.

The projects were presented at the NeurIPS conference, which gathered more than 16,000 participants and is a leading platform for showcasing cutting-edge developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning. MIT students’ works illustrate a broader vision of artificial intelligence that goes beyond simple automation and aims to stimulate creativity, transform education, and reimagine social interactions.
