OpenAI launches regional data storage for ChatGPT in Europe
OpenAI announced the launch of a local data storage system in Europe, which will allow European organizations to use the company’s products in accordance with local data sovereignty requirements.
OpenAI customers using the company’s API will be able to process data within Europe, and new ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users will have the ability to store user content in European data centers. When European data storage mode is activated, API requests will be processed locally with zero retention, meaning AI model requests and responses will not be stored on company servers.
In the case of ChatGPT, when European mode is enabled, user information will be stored in the region, including:
– Conversations with ChatGPT.
– User requests.
– Images.
– Uploaded files.
– Customized bots.
This decision follows similar steps by other tech giants: in October, GitHub launched cloud data storage in the EU, AWS introduced a “sovereign cloud” for Europe, and Google implemented local machine learning data processing for British users of the Gemini 1.5 Flash model.
The launch of European data storage comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of OpenAI’s practices. The company has already faced investigations in Spain and Germany, and in December, the Italian regulator fined OpenAI $15.6 million for alleged violations of European data protection requirements.
OpenAI notes that European data storage is currently only available for new projects using the company’s API, with no ability to upgrade existing projects. “We look forward to working with more organizations across Europe and the world in their AI initiatives, maintaining the highest standards of security, privacy, and compliance,” company representatives stated.
