OpenAI prepares revolution in AI devices market and patents future technologies

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence company, has filed an application for new trademarks with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), revealing ambitious plans to expand its product line. The document, submitted last Friday, indicates the company’s intention to go far beyond traditional software.

The application lists a wide range of devices, including headphones, augmented reality glasses, smartwatches, jewelry with integrated technologies, and protective cases for laptops and phones. All these devices are intended for “AI-assisted interaction, simulation, and learning.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, in a Sunday interview with Korean publication The Elect, confirmed the company’s intention to develop consumer AI devices “through partnership with several companies.” However, he warned that creating even a prototype of such a device would take “several years.” It is known that the company is already collaborating with former Apple lead designer Jony Ive on a secret hardware project.

Of particular interest is the mention of “programmable humanoid robots” and “humanoid robots with communication and learning functions for human assistance and entertainment” in the application. These plans are supported by the recent formation of a new robotics division led by Caitlyn Kalinowski, who joined OpenAI from Meta’s AR glasses development division in November last year.

According to The Information and published job listings, the company plans to test robots, possibly of humanoid type, equipped with special sensors and AI for working with human-like intelligence in real-world conditions.

The document also reveals OpenAI’s plans to develop its own AI chips and services using quantum computing to optimize AI model performance, indicating the company’s intention to strengthen its position in hardware and quantum technologies.
