USA introduced first robot police officer based on Ford Explorer

The USA introduced the first robot patrol police officer, and you know what? It looks like a regular car, only packed with AI to the brim. This unmanned patrol vehicle is called Police Unmanned Ground Vehicle, or simply PUG.

The vehicle was built by non-profit organization Policing Lab, which has been developing such vehicles for several years. They created a patrol vehicle based on Ford Explorer that can independently stop other cars and issue fines. And on the roof is a drone, there’s a thermal imager, 360-degree cameras, license plate readers, audio sensors and windows with touch displays.

PUG will patrol on predetermined routes in residential and business districts. And sheriff’s office employees can call the unmanned car to crime scenes as an auxiliary tool. And PUG will provide support by launching the drone or activating other functions. Won’t be used in chases – with speed limitation this car is not designed for highway driving. Too bad, I would have watched such chases.

For now a deputy sheriff will be behind the wheel during patrol, but in the future PUG may become fully unmanned.

Can you imagine the picture? A Ford Explorer drives down the street without a driver, cameras rotate, the drone on the roof is ready to take off, and an AI-based system scans plates and issues fines.
