Users spend more time with Gemini than with ChatGPT
OpenAI still leads in user numbers, but people are starting to spend more time with competitors. And this creates a serious problem.
Just a year ago, many considered Google’s attempts to catch up with OpenAI futile, writes the Financial Times. But a series of successful releases allowed them to reduce the gap. After launching the image generation model Nano Banana in the summer of this year, the number of users of the Gemini mobile app grew to 650 million.
And in November, Sam Altman told employees that Google’s recent achievements could “create temporary economic difficulties”. And “the atmosphere will be tense”. This happened against the backdrop of the release of Gemini 3 Pro, which surpassed GPT-5.1 in general knowledge tests.
Another 1 serious competitor — this is Anthropic. The company focused on safety and attracted corporate clients. And the Opus models for programming are considered best in class.
OpenAI still maintains leadership in user numbers and the service’s audience exceeds 800 million people according to Similarweb. However, people spend more time communicating with Gemini than with ChatGPT.
OpenAI itself committed to spending $1.4 trillion over 8 years on computing. The company expects hundreds of millions of paid subscribers and advertising, but these revenues may not be enough.
Some experts believe that OpenAI “overdid it in pursuit of scaling at any cost”. This year, developers rapidly released Sora, the Atlas browser and other products, but “they can’t do everything well at once”.
