Why Gemini reached 50% of ChatGPT’s mobile audience

Google Gemini already has half of ChatGPT’s audience on mobile devices. This is data from a new report by venture fund Andreessen Horowitz on the consumer AI market. 2.5 years of research shows an interesting picture.

ChatGPT is still the leader. But the gap is rapidly shrinking. Gemini takes 2nd place with 90% of users on Android. On web versions, Gemini gets 12% of ChatGPT’s traffic.

Google took 4 positions in the top generative AI products for the first time. These are Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM and Google Labs. Each product now has a separate domain. Their growth can be tracked independently.

Grok from xAI shows explosive growth. 4th place on web and 23rd in mobile apps. At the end of 2024, Grok didn’t even have a separate app. Now it has over 20 million active users monthly. 40% growth after Grok 4’s launch in July this year.

Chinese developers are actively entering the global market. 22 out of 50 top mobile apps were created in China. Quark from Alibaba takes 9th place on web. Doubao from ByteDance 4th in mobile apps.

Interesting trend with coding platforms. Lovable and Replit made it into the main list for the first time. But there’s a nuance here. Websites created through their platforms are counted in overall traffic. This helps them quickly gain popularity.

14 companies consistently stay in the top across all 5 reports. Among them Perplexity, Character AI, Midjourney and ElevenLabs. They represent different AI use scenarios. From communication to image and voice generation.
