xAI will build a 1 gigawatt data center faster than all competitors
The analytical group Epoch AI assessed the pace of construction of record-power data centers at 1 gigawatt. And according to their model, the first to reach the threshold of such power will be Anthropic with Amazon with the New Carlisle project. And xAI with the Colossus 2 project. Both are in final preparation stages and will launch at the beginning of next year.
At the same time, xAI shows a record in construction speed. About a year. The xAI data center Colossus 2 began construction on February 28 of this year, the launch took place on October 19 of this year. And reaching 1 gigawatt of power is planned for February 17, 26. Anthropic with Amazon started on February 9 of last year, and will reach 1 gigawatt in early January 26.
Also in year 26, Microsoft Fayetteville and OpenAI Stargate should reach 1 gigawatt of power.
For data collection, Epoch AI uses satellite images, permit documentation and public company reports. The model includes 3 key milestones: construction start, first launch and achieving 1 gigawatt of power.
If Epoch AI’s estimates are correct, the industry has moved to a real conveyor belt, where in 12-24 months a data center with 1 gigawatt of power is assembled. 3-4 times more powerful than the existing largest artificial intelligence clusters.
