YouTube Shorts integrates revolutionary AI from Google DeepMind
YouTube announced the integration of Veo 2, Google DeepMind’s latest video generation model, into its Shorts short-form video service. The innovation will allow creators to create video clips using artificial intelligence, significantly expanding the platform’s capabilities for creative expression.
Veo 2 represents Google’s response to OpenAI’s Sora technology in text-to-video generation. According to YouTube’s Product Director Dina Berrada, the new model features improved understanding of real-world physics and human movements, making generated content more detailed and realistic.
“You can even specify a particular style, lens type, or cinematic effect, making Dream Screen a simple and engaging tool for self-expression,” Berrada noted in the company’s official blog.
Previously, YouTube already provided creators with the ability to generate AI backgrounds for Shorts through the Dream Screen feature. Now with Veo 2, users will be able to create separate video clips for inclusion in their videos. The creation process is simple: just open the Shorts camera, select Green Screen, go to Dream Screen, and enter a text prompt to generate video.
To ensure transparency, all AI-generated videos will be marked using DeepMind’s SynthID tool, which adds watermarks and identifies content created by artificial intelligence. YouTube emphasizes the importance of clearly marking such content, though acknowledges that even such measures don’t completely eliminate risks of spreading synthetic content that could mislead viewers.
The feature is already available to creators in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. YouTube plans to gradually expand geographic access to the new technology. Importantly, the new tool will work faster than previous versions of the platform’s AI features, which should make the content creation process more efficient.
